Iowa Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated September 30, 2026

Iowa is a benchmark for a mid-November rut. Peak breeding lands around November 13, and the seeking-and-chasing phase that puts mature bucks on their feet in daylight runs roughly November 5 to 18. The far north tends to run a hair earlier than the south, but statewide it's remarkably consistent.

Where do the Iowa rut dates come from?

The Iowa DNR's white-tailed deer data sheet puts 70 percent of adult doe breeding between November 2 and 23, inside a breeding season that runs from October into January. Doe fawns come into heat later, with 75 percent of their breeding between November 17 and December 22. The DNR's deer page puts the peak of breeding activity in the first three weeks of November.

The windows above sit inside that span. The DNR does not publish a single peak day, so the November 13 peak in our windows is the middle of its November 2 to 23 span, and the north to south stagger is our estimate, not the DNR's. What the numbers do settle is the part that matters most for planning: the bulk of Iowa breeding happens in November, when archery is the only statewide season open.

How do the 2026 seasons in Iowa line up with the rut?

Iowa keeps its gun seasons out of the rut on purpose. The DNR's deer management plan says the state does not allow general muzzleloader or gun seasons to overlap the breeding season, to protect mature bucks during their most vulnerable stretch of the year. The 2026 to 2027 dates:

Every rut window on this page falls inside the early archery season. By the time the first shotgun season opens on December 5, the main rut is behind you, and what is left is the later breeding by doe fawns, which the DNR puts as late as December 22.

How many deer do Iowa hunters take?

Iowa hunters reported just under 102,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 season, up 1 percent from the season before, and about 43,000 of them were antlered bucks. Counting bucks that had already dropped their antlers, antlered deer made up 44 percent of the reported harvest.

Reported deer are not every deer. Once the DNR adjusts for deer that were never reported and deer lost to wounding, it estimates about 153,000 deer were taken by hunting that season.

Where is the public ground in Iowa?

The DNR's hunting atlas maps every piece of land open to public hunting in Iowa, about 764,000 acres in all. The largest share is the more than 410,000 acres of wildlife management areas run by the DNR's Wildlife Bureau, open every day of the year.

The Iowa Habitat and Access Program adds more than 32,000 acres of private land open to public hunting. It is still someone's property, so the DNR asks IHAP hunters to follow the program's guidelines for each tract. On any state public hunting area, a tree stand needs a metal tag with your DNR customer ID number, visible from the ground, and it can stay up from 7 days before the season opens until 7 days after it closes.
