Where do the Ohio rut dates come from?

Ohio's Division of Wildlife has pulled reproductive tracts from road-killed does in three studies, the latest in 2010 to 2012, but its report on them gives pregnancy rates, not breeding dates. On timing it speaks broadly: courtship starts in mid-October, peak breeding falls in October and November, and the archery season lines up with the peak of the rut.

The windows above sit inside that span, but their mid-November peaks and the small differences between regions are our estimates, not the Division's. Two of its statements are more specific: it calls the first and second weekends of November the two most significant archery weekends, and a 2016 report put the youth gun weekend before Thanksgiving in the latter part of the rut.

How do the 2026 seasons in Ohio line up with the rut?

The Division of Wildlife's 2026 to 2027 deer seasons:

• Archery: September 26 to February 7
• Archery, Disease Surveillance Area: September 12 to February 7
• Early gun, Disease Surveillance Area: October 10 to 12
• Youth gun: November 21 and 22
• Gun: November 30 to December 6
• Bonus gun: December 19 and 20
• Muzzleloader: January 2 to 5

Every rut window on this page falls inside archery season and closes before the youth gun weekend, November 21 and 22, the weekend before Thanksgiving that a 2016 Division report put in the latter part of the rut. Bowhunters need hunter orange that weekend. Gun week opens November 30.

How many deer do Ohio hunters take?

Ohio hunters checked about 232,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 season, the seventh-highest total on record. Just under 96,000 were antlered bucks, 42 percent of the harvest. Bowhunters took about 105,000 and the weeklong gun season about 85,000.

That was down from about 238,000 the season before, which set a buck record of about 101,000. An unprecedented summer outbreak of EHD cut the harvest in Athens, Meigs, Morgan and Washington counties to about 4,300 deer, from about 15,700 a year earlier.

Where is the public ground in Ohio?

Public land is only about 4 percent of Ohio, yet it produced nearly 15,800 deer, 7 percent of the 2024 to 2025 harvest. The Division of Wildlife owns more than 135,000 acres, the 24 state forests cover more than 200,000, mostly open to hunting, and the Wayne National Forest is a patchwork of 244,000 acres in the southeastern foothills.

The Ohio Landowner/Hunter Access Partnership opens enrolled private land with a free endorsement. During the gun seasons, most of those properties are bow-only for deer.

Which Ohio rules change a rut hunt?

• One antlered deer a season (any deer with an antler 3 inches or longer), inside a six-deer statewide limit made up of county limits.
• Hunting over bait is legal on private land, but not on public hunting areas or anywhere in the Disease Surveillance Area.
• Crossbows (75-pound minimum draw) are legal all archery season and took a third of the 2025 to 2026 harvest.
• During the youth gun, gun and muzzleloader seasons, every deer hunter, bowhunters included, must wear a hunter orange vest, coat, jacket or coveralls.
• CWD was first found in a wild Ohio deer in Wyandot County in 2020. In 2025 to 2026, 40 of 6,617 deer tested were positive, from Allen, Crawford, Hancock, Hardin, Marion and Wyandot counties.
• Deer carcasses and high-risk parts cannot come into Ohio from out of state, or leave the Disease Surveillance Area, unless they reach a certified processor or taxidermist within 24 hours.
• On Division of Wildlife hunting areas, stands must be portable, with nothing put into the tree, and may stay up September 1 to the end of February.
• Trailing a hit deer onto someone else's land takes the owner's written permission.
