Where do the North Dakota rut dates come from?

North Dakota Game and Fish's farm and ranch guide, by researchers who have radio-collared fawns and does across the Dakotas and southwestern Minnesota for more than 20 years, puts the average fawn birth at June 6 and the rut peak at November 10 to 15, with more than 70 percent of breeding from October 23 to November 20. Big game biologist Bill Jensen, working back from that June 6 fawning peak, puts the whitetail peak at November 15 to 20.

The department publishes no split by area, so the card above uses its span, with the peak from November 10 to 20 depending on which figure you go by. Jensen says day length drives the rut, and a cold snap or full moon may only tip activity toward one day. Badlands mule deer run a little later.

How do the 2026 seasons in North Dakota line up with the rut?

Every 2026 season opens at noon Central time, and this year's 39,100 gun licenses, drawn by lottery, are sold out:

• Archery: September 4 to January 3
• Nonresident archery on public land and PLOTS: September 14 to January 3
• Youth, residents only: September 18 to 27
• Regular gun: November 6 to 22
• Muzzleloader, whitetails only: November 27 to December 13

Bow season covers the whole breeding span. The gun season, held in early November partly because deer move more then, covers both peak estimates, and bowhunters must wear orange while it runs. The muzzleloader opens after the breeding span closes.

How many deer do North Dakota hunters take?

In the 2025 gun season, about 36,000 hunters took just under 21,000 deer, by the department's post-season survey, for 57 percent success. Antlered whitetail hunters filled 53 percent of their tags.

Bowhunters added about 6,600 deer, landowners on gratis licenses about 4,500, and muzzleloader hunters 215. For 2026 the department cut 3,200 gun licenses, mostly antlerless tags in the east.

Where is the public ground in North Dakota?

More than 90 percent of North Dakota is private, but private land is open to hunting unless posted, and the PLOTS walk-in program adds about 925,000 acres this fall, marked with yellow triangle signs. Game and Fish's 200-plus wildlife management areas cover more than 200,000 acres.

State trust land, just over 700,000 acres, is open to walk-in hunting unless signed closed, and the Little Missouri National Grassland covers about a million acres out west. Nonresidents cannot hunt WMAs or PLOTS from October 10 to 16.

Which North Dakota rules change a rut hunt?

• Each license is good for one deer and party hunting is not allowed. Any deer with at least one visible antler counts as antlered, and gun licenses are tied to a species, sex and unit.
• Hunting over bait is banned on WMAs, where even urine lures count as bait, and on federal refuges, waterfowl production areas, national grasslands, Corps land and state trust, park and forest land.
• Crossbows need a permit from the Game and Fish director in bow season, but gun license holders and youth hunters 14 or 15 can use one in the gun season.
• During the regular gun season every big game hunter, bowhunters included, must wear at least 400 square inches of solid fluorescent orange, head covering included.
• On WMAs, waterfowl production areas, Corps and Forest Service land, stands, blinds and trail cameras can go up August 20, must come down by January 31 and need an ID tag. Trail cameras on private land need the owner's written permission.
• CWD was first found in 2009 in a southwestern mule deer buck. In 2025, 16 hunter-killed deer tested positive in seven units, two of them new.
• Whole deer carcasses cannot come into the state, only low-risk parts such as boned meat and clean skull plates, and carcass waste moved out of its gun unit has to go to a landfill.
